Experience Sushi of Gari’s signature “omakase” at its finest. The chef chooses from many innovative sushi creations all of which you are sure to enjoy. All of the chef’s creations are creative and unique yet also exquisitely prepared.
Chef Gari has been preparing sushi since the age of nineteen when he was drawn to the artistic nature of sushi as a young boy in Tokyo. At Sushi of Gari, he still holds the same passion for sushi and promises that your meal will be distinctive and inventive.
Gari initially came to the United States in June 1978 in order to help a friend with the opening of a new Japanese restaurant in New York City. Subsequently, he worked as a Sushi Chef for several Japanese restaurants in NYC. During this period, while working, Gari observed many diners eating sushi in undesirable manner. He found that customers used too much soy sauce. In fact, they dipped whole pieces of sushi in the soy sauce, which caused them to taste nothing but the sauce instead of the delicate succulent sushi pieces. Gari wanted diners to enjoy the fresh taste of the fish as well as the delicate sushi rice instead of the soy sauce, so he tried explaining to his customers the better way to eat sushi, with little success.

Next, he decided to create his own brand of sauce to put directly on the sushi during the preparation stage. This meant that customers were saved the trouble of gauging the amount of sauce needed for each piece of sushi. In addition they would truly enjoy the taste of each sushi piece, which was prepared with the perfect amount of sauce, thereby experiencing the true taste of sushi. Having eaten at various restaurants in New York, Gari determined that he could create a variety of sauces that would go well with sushi in a similar pattern to world’s other cuisines such as French and Italian.
In January 1997, Gari decided to finally open his own restaurant, Sushi of Gari, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. His main focus continues to be his desire to serve his sushi with the original sauce and toppings he has created. These sauces only serve to enhance the sensitive taste and flavor of each morsel of fish. Since 1997, Gari’s influence has grown as he has opened three more restaurants, two in Manhattan and one in Tokyo.

Sushi Special Platter = Fraud The quality of the Chirashi that this restaurant offers is much better than others, but I couldn't believe what I received when it came to the 'Sushi Special'. 8 pieces instead of the promised 9, and one of those pieces was (barely) marinated eggplant with a tiny bit of bonito on some rice. It's unacceptable to "forget" a piece of sushi at the prices they're charging..

Ordered food with five co-workers. Everyone was disappointed. Portions were tiny, prices inflated and quality mediocre at.

The sushi at this restaurant was (a) terrible and (b) expensive. This was probably the worst sushi I have ever seen.

I never review places, but am so annoyed I had to: it took them over 1.5 hours to deliver my food (with a 45-60 min wait time posted). When I called the restaurant, I was first assured that it would be here in 3 mins. When it wasn't and I called back, they told me the system was down and they couldn't even tell me whether the order had left. I cancelled the order and 5 mins later it shows up. But without several of the items ordered. Last time I ever order from here.

Twice I ordered the shrimp tempura roll with extra sauce, and it arrived drier than a deli's sushi. Tried to order it on the side, and got completely ignored. When I called they were rude on the phone. For the price that they are charging, I would expect more.

While the food is amazing they are very slow when you do delivery. If not for the poor take out service I would give it five stars

The best Japanese on seamless hands down

Great quality fish, one of the best sushi places around BUT very stingy on soy/wasabi. When ordering 5 maki ($70 of food), it is ridiculous that Gari only gives you one minature pea sized ball of wasabi for delivery orders. I will keep my review as a 1 star rating until Gari fixes this issue. Make sure you ask for extra wasabi if you decide to order.

TERRIBLE DELIVERY...CONSISTENTLY LATE BY MORE THAN 40MIN. SICK AND TIRED OF PAYING MONEY THIS
Posted a year ago by ERIC A G.
I ordered a sashimi special ($30). What came was barely enough food to be an appetizer - what an insult (one piece of shrimp, 3 small pieces of tuna, 3 very small pieces of salmon, and 3 very small pieces of seared -yes cooked- fish). Also, I asked for wasabi and a small amount was provided smeared on a piece of green plastic. Just because someone orders through seamless web and gets it delivered to an office doesn't mean they should be ripped off. Since I haven't gotten sick (yet) on what I ate, I rated it a "2" star because the fish didn't taste fresh but it didn't taste horrible either.

Sushi of Gari confirmed my order at 11:50 AM and estimated the delivery time would take 45-60 minutes. It's now 1:40 PM and my food just arrived, so it's been 110 minutes. I called the restaurant and they indicated that the delivery person didn't even leave until 1:10, so the person left 20 minutes after they estimated my food would be here. Sushi of Gari should notify customers if the estimated delivery time doubles, this is a ridiculous amount of time to wait for an order.

Food was fair, but overpriced for what was sent; Didn't pack vegetarian food separately; Not enough soy sauce or trays. Poor service - called asking for delivery in ice for large order, but wasn't sent that way. Also took about 25 minutes longer than the 75 minute suggested max delivery time.

The best sushi you can get on SeamlessWeb.

Too expensive for what you get on delivery. In the restaurant is a different and much better story.

I eat at Gari frequently, but this was my first time with delivery. Fish was good, but they only give you one piece of sashimi instead of 2 pieces "per order" as listed on SeamlessWeb. They denied any responsibility for the website and made no offer, but did call back 20 minutes later and acknlowledge the error and offered replacement. Not worth delivery IMO, but the Omakase at the counter is tops.

The management (they said they were the management) was extremely rude at Sushi of Gari. I listed a new phone number in the contact field for them to call, as well as tried to make a call to the restaurant to let them know. However, the only option when you dial their number is to make a reservation or listen to a recording of their location. The food hadn't come within an hour, so I called the restaurant to double check they dialed the right number, which they hadn't (I was able to talk to someone by calling the reservation line). The "manager" screamed at me for being "irresponsible." The yelling continued for over 5 minutes, as they refused to re-make my sushi even for me to come pick up. They also then refused to refund my money. At one point the manager put down the phone and answered a personal call and then picked my line back up and continued screaming. I have turned them in to my corporation, which is a large investment bank that they serve food to nightly. They didn't even take this into consideration when I called... do not eat here.

I ordered from here twice. Both times, it took awfully long time for my meals to be delivered (well over one hour). They taste good though.

Excellent fresh fish. Mixed up the order and immediately fixed it with a comp item too. Great spot for sushi snobs.
